Estate Planning for the Rest of Us (For Estates Under $10 Million with a focus on Navigating the Portability Rules)
With the estate tax exclusion set at more than $5 million, many Americans are (wrongly) re-thinking the need for any estate planning. A married couple in 2001 with a combined $7 million estate would be knocking down our door to meet with us to find ways to save estate taxes, but not necessarily today, and that is a big mistake. This session will look at various non-tax considerations and why our clients still need to be focused on their estate planning, including considerations for blended families and other family dynamics, family members with special needs, ownership of a closely-held business, overall asset protection, education and charitable planning, beneficiary designations and hard to value assets. The session will also focus on navigating the final portability (DSUE) rules and comparing the benefits of making the portability election vs. funding a credit shelter trust.
